STEPHEN'S RUN

#31 - Stephen Mim takes the inside hand off and hits the hole perfectly. He carries a couple of line backers 9 yards. Great run!

Volunteers Needed!

We need volunteers to create a large banner for the kids to run through at the beginning of the game. Let me know if you can and I will put all that reply together so you can create a banner together.

Parents if you can create a sign for your player and or the team as whole to use during the game, I am sure the kids would love that.

Two volunteers to work the chains
Two volunteers to record player participation.

NEW LOOK

Sunday, August 30, 2009

Because the content of the Killian Gamecocks site was outgrowing the webpage I put together originally, I had to upgrade to a more versatile webpage. Not as flashy but way more functional.

HITS FROM SCRIMMAGE AGAINST BILLS

#9 Durand Brown - Watches as the running back tries to take the corner. Then he creeps up and puts a great hit on the running back.

# 34 Sha'heem Pinkney breaks into the backfield and stops the reverse.

Parents - the 11th man "Let's go gamecocks!"

#9 Durand Brown - stops another runner trying to cut the corner.

UPDATE FROM COACH CHUCK

Parents,
At this point in pre-season practice, I must say I am very pleased with everyone’s progress. The players are starting to get and understand the game of football and are working hard at practice. I am proud of each and every one of them. Practices from here on out are going to get more intense. We are only a couple of weeks away from our first game and it is on us (the coaching staff) to make sure the players are ready to compete safely. I think we have a chance to be a very good team but we must be prepared.

The rest of this month is very busy. Below is a breakdown of the 2009 Killian Gamecocks schedule and things needed. Note: The schedule below is subject to change.

  • Monday – 08/17/09 – Voluntary* practice
*Some kids must attend in order to have the required hours of conditioning/practice to dress out in Full Pads. (Andres Rodriguez, Jayden Wigfall)
  • Tuesday – 08/18/09 – Practice – Helmets
On Tuesday, we will be having our first “Helmets” practice. All players must have their “white” helmets at practice. Please use a permanent marker to write your players name on the INSIDE of the helmet where it can only be viewed by looking inside the helmet. Also, please be prepared to leave your helmet with the coaches/team moms so that we can put their Gamecock decals on the helmets. Mouth guards are required for every practice from this point on. Black mouth pieces that attach to the helmets are required.
  • Thursday – 08/20/09 – Practice – Full pads
Thursday is our first full “in pads” practice. All players must have all pads/practice pants/practice jerseys by this time. White practice pants are preferred because black pants will be too hot. You can get practice pants that have pads in them. These are good for practice but not for an actual game. The coaching staff also prefers the practice jerseys to be garnet. Be aware the jerseys must be able to fit over their shoulder pads. The kids will be “hitting and tackling” in this practice. Full pads are required for practice from this point on.
  • Saturday – 08/22/09 – Weigh-ins/ID Pictures
Official weigh-ins will begin on Saturday. ID Cards will be made. Each card will be $5 dollars. Please be ready to pay for your player’s card. I am not sure if we will be able practice this day as well. If we can, we will.
  • Monday – 08/24/09 – Light Scrimmage - CANCELLED
The players will be having a light scrimmage on the 24th.
  • Tuesday – 08/25/09 – Practice – Full Pads
  • Thursday – 08/27/09 – Practice – Full Pads
  • Saturday – 08/29/09 Practice/Scrimmage or Jamboree
We have not decided if the kids will be participating in the Jamboree as of yet. We will let you know shortly. It will depend upon where we as coaches feel the kids are at as a team and if they are ready.
  • 09/01/09 – Full Practice
  • 09/03/09 – Day off - Because of the crazy schedule, we are giving the players the night off.
  • 09/04/09 – Half Practice/Walk Through
We will be working on our final game plan for our first game as well as running through a couple of drills.
  • 09/05/09 Game 1!

Thank you! Go Gamecocks!
-Coach Chuck

Drills/Games - The Shark Game

Tuesday, August 4, 2009

A great drill/game to run with 5-6-7 year old football players is the Shark Game.

Here is how it is played.

You line up all the players on one sideline. From the group you pick one player and have him stand in the middle of the field. You use criteria for picking that player (paying attention during drills, having the best time in the bear crawl that day…). This player will be your shark. All the other players are the fish.

Once everyone is set, you blow the whistle and the game begins.

The Shark’s goal is to tag as many people as he can. The fish try to avoid being tagged. If a fish is tagged, he/she becomes another shark for the next round. You keep doing this until you are down to just 2 fish left.

Once there are two fish left, clear the sharks off the field. Make one of the fish a shark. Get the players on the sideline to cheer for who they want to win (FISH! SHARK!). After the first round, switch the shark and the fish. Best of 5 rounds wins!

A couple of notes: Once there are more sharks than fish, start making the game harder. The sharks lay on their back and the Fish sit on their butt, you can also take this time to work on stances. Make the fish get in a running stance (WR, RB) and the Sharks in a 3-point.

In the final rounds, you can coach the fish and sharks on how to avoid or “catch the fish.”

You will notice that the players are very focused during this drill. It gives you a very good chance to coach certain parts of football.

Things you are looking for in this drill:
  • Evasiveness (good runners are not always the fastest)
  • Speed (some kids clear the field before anyone can react)
  • Intelligence (looking for ways to get past, to corner)
  • Aggression (how hard are the trying to get the fish/get away)
  • Will/Drive (who just can’t stand to lose)
  • Leaders/Team Work (you get him; I will get this one…)
